Important information regarding visiting Ramsey Island in 2025

 

The RSPB have recently been informed that due to health and safety concerns the RNLI have taken the decision to close all access to the old lifeboat station at St Justinians. This slipway provides the only access for boats bringing people to and from Ramsey Island. We hope that this issue can be resolved as soon as possible, or that alternative arrangements can be made. However, as it stands, we are currently in the unfortunate situation where Ramsey will be closed to the public until further notice. We will update on this as soon as we know more.

    This has been a longstanding issue which has failed to be resolved. Now this is a crisis situation.
    Hopefully it can be resolved.

 Unfortunately it has been a little longer than I expected before posting this blog, the seabird season and chough monitoring have certainly got away with us. A shot from the Western cliffs during one of our last Auk counts of the season on the 11th June © Alys Perry.  The past few weeks have been dedicated to seabird counts with all seabirds on Ramsey, the Bishops & Clarks and Grassholm being counted. This involved a series of boat surveys, cliff counts and drone surveys. The 2024 season has begun!

We are now back for the 2024 season with the same island team but with a new site for the blog. After various technical difficulties with the blog last year we have decided to try blogspot instead. Abermawr at sunset © Alys Perry. Like the birds myself and Nia migrated to warmer climates over the winter. Nia spent her winter visiting the Seychelles where she previously worked and I spent several weeks in Ecuador helping with rainforest bird research in the Andes. Although the island was uninhabited over the winter we still conducted our winter checks whenever we could and lucky we did as Derek discovered a large landslide just above the island harbour on the 7th of January. The landslide completely covered the track leading up the farmhouse, making it impassable and took out the harbour fencing.
